Bizantine Church
of Panaghya
(9th - 10th cent.) |
|
 |
|
|
| |
The small church of Panaghya is situated in
the low part of the town near its centre,
it has some topographical points of reference in the north
the Cathedral and the Archbishoprie and in the south a building
used for a Secondary Scool.
It is situated among old houses and dilapidated roud menders,
which let it without breath and hide the simple pure and harmonious
line.
It is a precious and holy fragment of Rossano.

Diocesan Museum:
"Codex purpureus" Rossanensis
(6th - 7th century). The purple Code of Rossano is an artistical book
and, biblical document of great interest. It is actually preserved in
the Diocesan Museum of holy art. The Church of Rossano has a well, known
merit of having saved and keeping alive those papers of thin and purple
parchment, whose freshness has challenged forteen centuries.
The Vatican Library and others wanted to buy the Code, but the Cathedral
Chapter of Rossano has always refused to sell it, even though the Code
has been shown in different exhibitions.
The Code is a Tetragospel, reached to us mutilated. Infact, during the
centuries more than the half of the original code, about 400 papers,
has been last.
Today there are 188 papers equal to 376 faces, which contains the whole
S. Matteo gospel and a part of S. Marco one (until XVI chapter) in the
greek text, illuminated in capital silver and golden letters, on two
columns and twenty lines each others, written on purple parchment.
Moreover, it contains a part of Eusebio letter at Carpiano on the concordance
of the Gospels. The Code is adorned by fifteen illustrated plates which
are the introductions at the evangelic texts. It represents the holy
Byzantine art of the 5th - 6th century, made precious by the purple
colouring (from which derives the name of Purple Code, by which the
biblical manuscript of Rossano is universally known)
